Job Description

The Staff Nurse / Senior Staff Nurse – NICU will be responsible for monitoring and managing neonatal patients, assisting in critical care procedures, and ensuring adherence to NICU protocols and safety standards. This requires strong clinical expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a high-pressure environment.


Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure safety and security of neonates by strictly following NICU safety protocols.
  • Provide regular updates to parents on neonate condition and offer emotional support.
  • Inform parents immediately in case of any change in the neonate’s condition.
  • Review doctor’s notes and medication charts on admission and implement care plans.
  • Prepare individualized nursing care plans and deliver bedside neonatal care.
  • Monitor neonates in incubators, ventilators, and other life-support systems.
  • Identify and report abnormal clinical findings promptly to the medical team.
  • Assist doctors in neonatal resuscitation, stabilization, and critical care procedures.
  • Ensure all prescribed investigations are conducted and reports are available on time.
  • Manage pharmacy indents, medication storage, and bedside drug administration.
  • Administer medications accurately and monitor for adverse drug reactions.
  • Coordinate procurement of blood and blood products and monitor transfusion reactions.
  • Complete preoperative checklists and prepare neonates for surgical procedures.
  • Assess gestational age and manage conditions of preterm, post-term, and high-risk neonates.
  • Understand and interpret APGAR scoring and neonatal assessments.
  • Apply knowledge of Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
  • Perform accurate IV fluid and drug dosage calculations.
  • Maintain strict infection control practices including hand hygiene and aseptic techniques.
  • Ensure compliance with ICU protocols, narcotic policies, and safety guidelines.
  • Enforce visitor protocols to maintain aseptic environment in NICU.
  • Maintain accurate nursing records, reports, and documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with NABH and Nursing Excellence standards.
  • Maintain cleanliness, hygiene, and proper functioning of NICU equipment.
  • Participate in shift handovers to ensure continuity of care.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams for comprehensive neonatal care.
  • Respond promptly and effectively to neonatal emergencies.
  • Provide education and guidance to parents regarding neonatal care.
  • Participate in audits, training programs, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain confidentiality and uphold patient rights at all times.
  • Work in rotational shifts and handle high-pressure situations effectively.
  • Demonstrate empathy, professionalism, and a patient-centric approach.
  • Contribute to improving neonatal outcomes and overall quality of care.
