Job Description

The Optometrist Intern will support eye care services by assisting in vision testing, preliminary eye examinations, patient preparation, documentation, and coordination with optometrists and ophthalmologists. This entry-level is suitable for candidates with a diploma in ophthalmology or optometry-related education. The intern will gain practical exposure to hospital-based eye care workflow, diagnostic support, patient communication, and clinical documentation while working under supervision.


Roles & Responsibilities

  • Assist optometrists and ophthalmologists during basic eye examination and patient assessment.
  • Perform preliminary vision screening under supervision using approved testing methods.
  • Support refraction testing, visual acuity checks, and basic ophthalmic measurements when assigned.
  • Prepare patients for consultation, diagnostic testing, and follow-up visits.
  • Record patient history, visual complaints, test observations, and examination findings accurately.
  • Maintain patient comfort, privacy, and respectful communication during eye care procedures.
  • Assist in handling ophthalmic instruments, charts, lenses, and diagnostic equipment carefully.
  • Coordinate with reception, doctors, optical, diagnostic, and nursing teams for smooth patient flow.
  • Follow hospital protocols for infection control, hygiene, equipment cleaning, and patient safety.
  • Support documentation of prescriptions, reports, referrals, and follow-up instructions.
  • Learn clinical workflow related to eye check-ups, refraction, screening, and ophthalmic OPD support.
  • Report abnormal findings, patient discomfort, or equipment issues to senior staff promptly.
  • Maintain cleanliness and readiness of the optometry examination area.
  • Participate in training sessions, departmental learning, and supervised clinical activities.
  • Develop professional skills in patient handling, ophthalmic testing, and clinical coordination.
