Staff Nurse – Cardiac OT

KEM Hospital is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Staff Nurse – Cardiac OT to provide specialized perioperative nursing care for cardiac surgical procedures. The involves assisting in complex cardiac surgeries, maintaining strict sterile conditions, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring patient safety throughout the operative process in accordance with hospital and clinical standards.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Receive, verify, and confirm patiententity, consent forms, and all pre-operative investigation reports.
• Prepare patients for cardiac surgery including shaving, gowning, pre-medication support, and psychological reassurance.
• Ensure OT readiness with sterile instruments, cardiac surgical sets, perfusion equipment, grafts, valves, and supporting devices.
• Verify availability and functionality of critical equipment such as heart-lung machine, defibrillator, monitors, and suction systems.
• Participate actively in surgical safety checklist and time-out procedures before incision.
• Function as scrub nurse or circulating nurse during complex cardiac procedures including CABG, valve replacements, congenital repairs, transplant, and vascular surgeries.
• Maintain strict aseptic technique and infection control standards throughout all surgical procedures.
• Perform accurate sponge, needle, and instrument counts before, during, and after surgery.
• Anticipate surgeon requirements and assist with advanced cardiac surgical instruments and materials.
• Coordinate closely with perfusionist and anesthesia teams during cardiopulmonary bypass and weaning phases.
• Monitor intraoperative documentation including medications administered, patient vitals (as delegated), and procedural notes.
• Ensure safe handling and timely dispatch of specimens for histopathology, microbiology, or other investigations.
• Assist in safe transfer and handover of patients to cardiac ICU with complete intraoperative details.
• Participate in OT cleaning, sterilization, and preparation for subsequent procedures.
• Reconcile OT inventory, report missing, damaged, or malfunctioning equipment immediately.
• Maintain accurate OT records, registers, and incident reporting documentation.
• Ensure strict adherence to hospital policies, OT protocols, and clinical guidelines.
• Follow biomedical waste management protocols and ensure safe disposal of surgical materials.
• Monitor expiry dates of drugs, grafts, consumables, and surgical disposables.
• Follow all safety protocols related to organ retrieval and transplant procedures.
• Maintain readiness for emergency situations and support critical surgical interventions.
• Work in rotational shifts, including night duties and on-call requirements as per OT schedule.
• Collaborate effectively with surgeons, anesthetists, perfusionists, and OT support staff.
• Ensure continuous compliance with quality standards, accreditation requirements, and patient safety protocols.
• Perform any additional responsibilities assigned by HOD or hospital management as required.
