Assistant Blood Transfusion Officer

KEM Hospital is seeking a highly responsible and detail-oriented Assistant Blood Transfusion Officer to support and supervise safe blood bank operations, donor management, transfusion services, and compliance with statutory and quality standards. The involves ensuring safe blood collection, testing, storage, issue, and documentation while maintaining strict adherence to FDA guidelines, SOPs, and hospital protocols. The position requires strong clinical, supervisory, and decision-making capabilities to ensure patient safety and smooth functioning of the blood transfusion services.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Conduct proper pre-donation counseling and obtain detailed donor medical history.
• Perform pre-donation medical examination in coordination with nursing staff.
• Assist and supervise phlebotomy and blood collection procedures.
• Provide post-donation care and manage any adverse donor reactions.
• Supervise verification of blood grouping performed by technical staff.
• Oversee cross-matching procedures between donor blood and patient samples.
• Ensure accuracy of infectious disease testing including HIV I & II, HBsAg, HCV, MP, VDRL, and other required tests.
• Supervise proper segregation and discarding of reactive or unsuitable blood units.
• Ensure documentation and disposal processes are compliant with FDA guidelines.
• Maintain and preserve donor and patient sample records for prescribed retention periods.
• Supervise investigation of post-transfusion reactions and ensure proper documentation and reporting.
• Oversee quality control of blood products, reagents, and testing kits.
• Supervise issuance of blood and blood components as per clinical requirement and expiry status.
• Take decisions regarding blood group compatibility and component selection in complex cases.
• Ensure proper documentation and informed consent for transfusion in complicated cases.
• Prepare and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for blood bank operations.
• Maintain proper documentation of donor refreshments and associated operational costs.
• Ensure issuance of donor certificates and appreciation materials.
• Monitor blood supply sources and coordinate donor mobilization when shortages occur.
• Report and escalate cases of blood received from unauthorized or unsafe sources.
• Ensure all blood bank activities are performed strictly as per SOPs and regulatory guidelines.
• Maintain complete and accurate electronic and manual documentation of all blood bank processes.
• Supervise and guide technical and support staff including technicians, nurses, clerks, and attendants.
• Ensure smooth and efficient functioning of the blood transfusion department.
• Take final responsibility for decision-making in blood transfusion operations as per SOPs.
• Coordinate with management and HOD for operational improvements and compliance.
• Perform any additional duties assigned by hospital management or HOD as required.
