Job Description
The Consultant – Transfusion Medicine will be responsible for managing all aspects of blood transfusion services, including donor management, blood collection, testing, storage, and utilization. The involves ensuring safe transfusion practices, interpreting immunohematology results, and guiding clinicians on appropriate blood component usage. The candidate will lead the blood bank team, ensure regulatory compliance, and contribute to quality assurance and patient safety initiatives.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Oversee end-to-end blood bank operations including collection, processing, testing, storage, and distribution.
- Ensure safe and appropriate use of blood and blood components for patient care.
- Interpret immunohematology tests including blood grouping, cross-matching, and antibody screening.
- Guide clinicians on transfusion practices and appropriate component therapy.
- Monitor and manage blood inventory, ensuring adequate stock and minimizing wastage.
- Supervise donor selection, screening, and blood donation processes.
- Ensure compliance with national blood bank regulations, standards, and accreditation requirements.
- Implement and monitor quality assurance and quality control programs in the blood bank.
- Investigate and manage transfusion reactions and adverse events.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation of blood bank activities.
- Coordinate with hospital departments for timely availability of blood and components.
- Lead and train blood bank staff, technicians, and support personnel.
- Participate in audits, inspections, and regulatory reviews.
- Promote voluntary blood donation through awareness programs and camps.
- Ensure proper maintenance and calibration of blood bank equipment.
- Monitor infection control practices and biosafety standards.
- Stay updated with advancements in transfusion medicine and immunohematology.
- Support clinical decision-making in complex transfusion cases.
- Maintain confidentiality, ethical standards, and patient safety at all times.
