FAQ

What is chronic myeloid leukemia (CML)?

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a type of cancer that starts in the bone marrow. It is a slow-growing cancer that affects the production of white blood cells.

What are the different types of CML?

There are three main types of CML:

  • Chronic phase: This is the most common type of CML. It is a slow-growing cancer that usually does not cause any symptoms.
  • Accelerated phase: This is a more aggressive type of CML. It is characterized by a rapid increase in the number of white blood cells and a decrease in the number of red blood cells and platelets.
  • Blast phase: This is the most advanced type of CML. It is characterized by a rapid increase in the number of immature white blood cells (blasts).

What are the different stages of CML?

  • Chronic phase: The number of immature white blood cells (blasts) in the blood and bone marrow is less than 10%.
  • Accelerated phase: The number of blasts increases to 10-19%.
  • Blast phase: The number of blasts is 20% or more.
