Job Description
The OT Scrub Nurse will assist surgeons during surgical procedures by maintaining sterile technique, preparing surgical instruments, supporting operation theatre workflow, ensuring patient safety, and coordinating with OT nurses, anesthetists, surgeons, CSSD, and biomedical teams. This requires strong OT knowledge, infection control awareness, surgical instrument handling skills, and the ability to work calmly in a sterile surgical environment.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Prepare operation theatre, surgical instruments, sterile trays, linen, sutures, and consumables before surgery.
- Perform surgical scrubbing, gowning, gloving, and sterile field preparation as per OT protocol.
- Assist surgeons during procedures by passing instruments, sutures, sponges, and required materials.
- Maintain strict aseptic technique and ensure sterility throughout the surgical procedure.
- Check instrument count, sponge count, needle count, and surgical material count before and after surgery.
- Coordinate with circulating nurse, anesthetist, surgeon, OT technician, CSSD, and support staff.
- Ensure availability of emergency medicines, surgical implants, equipment, and procedure-specific materials.
- Monitor OT discipline, infection control, PPE usage, biomedical waste handling, and patient safety practices.
- Support patient positioning, draping, surgical site preparation, and OT setup under guidance.
- Report missing instruments, equipment faults, contamination, or safety concerns immediately.
- Maintain OT records, surgical checklists, material usage details, and procedure documentation.
- Clean, arrange, and hand over used instruments to CSSD after surgery as per hospital SOP.
- Support emergency surgery readiness and urgent OT preparation when required.
- Maintain patient privacy, dignity, and confidentiality during the complete surgical process.
- Deliver safe, sterile, efficient, and professional surgical nursing support.
