ADH responds to changes in blood osmolality, or the concentration of solutes in the blood. When blood osmolality increases, such as in dehydration, ADH secretion is stimulated, causing the kidneys to reabsorb more water. Conversely, when blood osmolality decreases, as in overhydration, ADH secretion decreases, allowing the body to excrete excess water. This regulatory mechanism helps maintain a stable internal environment.
